DEFYING GRAVITY

Despite all that Sally achieved in the first half of her life, behind her passion and dedication for helping and mentoring others, leading programs and contributing to improving systems and services, Sally was fighting her own battle that eventually would come to a standstill and impact every part of her life.

"Nothing could have ever prepared me for the impact that mental illness would have on my life, nor the immense emotional suffering and pain that would come with each step I took in trying to recover.  After being diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, anxiety and depression at the age of fifteen, for over half of my life, I found myself trapped in a vicious cycle that kept me so stuck... to the point where I didn't ever think I would be here after the age of thirty."

At the age of fifteen, my life was turned upside down when I was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, anxiety and depression.  After multiple hospital admissions and losing every part of who I once was, I hit rock bottom after fifteen years and was left facing one single question:

"Do I want the rest of my life to be a revolving door of hospital admissions, or do I want more?"

"I wanted more..."

"Mental health is personal to me."

Four years later, Sally would go on to graduate from university with a Bachelor of Paramedicine and a vision of setting up a unique model of care, centred around the promotion of greater recovery-orientated outcomes for individuals and families who are affected by eating disorders.

From simply surviving to thriving, in 2015, Sally's own story and her journey of recovery from anorexia, depression and anxiety became the catalyst for using her lived experience to help others.  Since then, Sally's insights and her ability to bring a shared understanding of the challenges faced have fuelled her passion and commitment towards supporting individuals and families, as well as working alongside clinicians and other key stakeholders as an advocate for greater person-centred and recovery-orientated outcomes at an individual, organisational and systemic level.
